Medication Guidelines

Medication will be administered at school only in exceptional cases where failure to take prescribed medication could jeopardize the child's health. When it is deemed necessary that prescribed medication be administered by the school, it will be given by certified personnel unless the student has been judged capable of administering his/her own medication. It is the parent/guardian's responsibility to assure that the licensed physician's order, a parent/guardian's signed request, and a properly labeled medication are brought to the school and the school nurse is contacted. A written order from the child's physician, detailing medication, dosage, and time intervals to be given must be on file. The required form can be found to the left under Medication Authorization Form. This form must be completed for all medication including prescribed daily medication, inhaler, EpiPen and non-prescribed over the counter medication such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Each year a new form is required.

A student may self-administer, inhalers and/or EpiPen medication on school grounds, at school activities while under the supervision of school personnel or before and after normal school activities when the medication has been prescribed by a physician, and the student's parent/guardian have provided the school nurse with written authorization for the self-administration from the physician. With the exception of inhalers and/or EpiPen medication, all medications must be delivered by the parent to the school in the original labeled pharmacy container.

Medications will be administered as closed to the child's prescribed time as possible by the school nurse. However, there may be times that is necessary for the child's parent/guardian to come to school to administer the dosage. Any unused medication must be picked up by the parent/guardian at the end of the school year. No medication will be sent home with the student and any medication not picked up will be discarded.
