Students with Diabetes

If your child has diabetes, the school nurse and/or principal should be notified as soon as possible and before the child begins school. The student will not be denied access to school or school related activities based on the diagnosis, but the District must comply with the requirements as outlined in the Care of Students with Diabetes Act. A Diabetes Medical Management Plan is a required and beneficial tool for the school for any student with diabetes. The diabetic action plan is a set of orders provided by your child’s physician to instruct the school nurse and/or trained staff on how to manage and care for your child’s diabetes and medication needs while at school during the day. It provides routine glucose monitoring instructions, insulin dosage information for home and meal time, sliding scale doses, as well as meal plans and snack plans. It also provides emergency care instructions for hyperglycemia and/or hypoglycemia from your physician. This allows this school to meet the specific needs of your child and provide the appropriate care and assistance your child may need during the school day.

Please collaborate with your child’s physician in having this plan completed before school starts each year, and bring it with your student’s diabetic supplies, insulin and emergency Glucagon medication on or before the first day of school.

If you would like to meet to review the Diabetic Medical Management Plan before school starts, or if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free the school nurse.
